... which I suspect is a fair description of the noise that came from Christian's left knee when he twisted it in the deep snow! Sad to report that he landed on it with his full weight and a 30KG pack while postholing through snow in the highlands and it's gradually worsened. The guys have therefore decided to retrace their steps rather than push even further into the interior where getting back to civilisation would have potentially placed a burden on the local emergency services (and the Insurance company). They withdrew to the huts at Laugerfell last night and are now making plans to get back to Reykjavik.
They're obviously very disappointed indeed and report that Iceland is truly a beautiful and wild place but feel this was the right decision. We all wish to extend a huge thankyou to all our kind and generous sponsors. We have exceeded our target for Winstons Wish for which we are pleased and grateful. They will be back to finish the job! There is a final private note from Christian about the pain now coming from his knee, but we'll save that (and the expletives) until after the watershed. Standby for a post-expedition note from the guys themselves when they get back to civilisation. Stay tuned ...
